TEFLON is a registered Trademark name of the material POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE abbreviated PTFE.
To most TEFLON is a common word that best describes the material called POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE and TEFLON is a Registered trademark name of the material belonging to E.I DUPONT de NEMOURS CO. now known as CHEMOURS CO.. The material was discovered by accident on April 6 1938 by Dr Roy Plunkett and his assistant Jack Rebok while working at Duponts jackson laboratory in Edison New Jersey. They were running experiments with Freon refrigerants. The goal was to find something non toxic and non flammable than the Chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants like Sulfer dioxide and ammonia that was toxic, corrosive, and flammable.
They had made a batch of 100 lbs of Tetrafluoroethylene and stored the gas in iron cylinders and stored the canisters at temperatures conducive to dry ice until ready to be chlorinated.
The morning of April 6 1938 Dr plunkett instructed his assistant jack Rebok to set up test apparatus for the tetrafluoroethylene. Typically procedure would be to open valve on canister and the fluid would flow out. This time there was nothing to flow out as if it was empty.
Knowing the weight of the cylinder was upon storing it and it remained the same weight after storing it, they were puzzled so Dr Plunkett turned the cylinder upside down and some white powder had come out onto work bench. they scraped around some of the inside the cylinder with wire to get some more of the powder. Dr Plunkett recalled what they got out of the cylinder certainly didnt add up, so he knew there must be more inside. Eventually the two men decided to cut open the cylinder and found even more inside packed to the bottom and sides He stated what they determined was when the tetrafluoroethylene gas that was stored in the iron cylinders had reacted in the iron the canister was made out of.
This gave you POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE, the white waxy type material which was non flammable and corrosion resistant. They realized the material was diiferent and had potential,
One of the first projects PTFE was used in was the Manhattan project where they used PTFE to line pipes and valves . In 1946 KINETIC CHEMICALS which was a partnership between Dupont and General motors trademarked the name TEFLON to describe POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE. Later the trademark name was transferred to Dupont .
Being that the name Teflon was originally registered to Kinetic Chemicals, then later Dupont ,anyone using the word Teflon in any way, whether it was in print or any other form the person or company using the word was to acknowledge that for the word TEFLON by putting the R and who it was registered on the page that mentioned the word TEFLON. . That was the way it was for many years, In the early 2000 years when the internet had established itself DuPont got creative and someone came up with the idea to charge a licensing fee for anyone using the word Teflon in literature or basically anything. The fee would be based on the dollar amount of Teflon one had used over the previous year. Being that NACOM uses a lot of PTFE in the product we make( our product line ) after giving much thought to it NACOM has elected to not use the word Teflon in our literature, thus is why we dropped the domain teflonsprayguns.com and kept ptfesprayguns.com and will refrain from using the word Teflon in any literature or website we operate or produce.
NACOM DOES OWN THE DOMAIN AND WEBSITE TEFLONVALVE.COM and again we refrain from using the word Teflon when describing PTFE. Because NACOM does manufacture 90% of our product line out of virgin PTFE which is alot of PTFE . NACOM does not use strictly Dupont PTFE therefore it would be impossible to figure the dollar amount of PTFE we used the previous year. In addition to Dupont NACOM does use PTFE produced by 3M and other qualified companies producing PTFE in the United states that sell virgin PTFE resin and solid material that is considered as good as DuPont material or better. All material NACOM uses is guaranteed and certification documentation is on file for review by written request.
NACOM does not use any material that is produced or associated with CHINA , RUSSIA.
